Travel Diary | A Weekend in Whitby

Travel Guide to Whitby view of the sea

A few weeks back, Tom and I took advantage of the long bank holiday weekend and headed three hours east to the pretty seaside town of Whitby.

Here's what we got up to...

The weekend started off a little misty so we headed to a local tea room for breakfast. We stumbled upon Rusty Shears after spotting the cute courtyard when walking from our guest house to the center of town. The decor inside was vintage and cosy, the perfect spot for a pot of tea and a bacon butty. It wasn't long before the sun came out and we could enjoy the views a little more, so we headed up to the abbey via the famous 199 steps and took in the sea views over the rooftops that lined the harbour. Whitby is full of pretty cobbled streets and windy allies not to mention instagram worthy pastel coloured doors, definitely my kind of town.

During the day we made the most of the sea side attractions including the traditional two pence slot machines and crazy golf, (why not eh?!) munched fish and chips in the harbour and sipped beers on a rooftop bar. There is so much to do it Whitby, it really felt like a mini holiday by the sea.

After a quick change we headed back out for dinner, stopping at The Four Seasons Mediterranean restaurant across the bridge. The food was amazing and the service was personal and friendly. I had a vegetable bake and Tom had a chicken dish, both were really good value and just what we needed after a day of fish, chips and ice cream.

We stayed in the Riviera Guest house, which had the most amazing view of the sea overlooking Whitby pier. The rooms were cosy and modern with free wifi and cooked breakfast.

The next day we packed up and headed twenty minutes out of Whitby to Robin Hoods Bay for a few hours before heading home. The sleepy coastal town was just walking up when we arrived so we took advantage of this quiet time to wander the many narrow streets choosing our dream home. A little quieter than Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay is a small fishing town that sits on a large beach, great for a summer getaway, it kind of reminded me of Mevagissey in Cornwall.

We headed home at mid day feeling revitalised after short break by the sea. I always say this after a staycation in this country, but we need to do this more often. It was so lovely to getaway for a few days but not spend a fortune. We love European city breaks but places like Whitby prove you don't always need to jump on a plane to discover somewhere new.

Where are your favourite places in this country for a short break?
